Expected Timeline of a Tummy Tuck Recovery

When you begin planning for your tummy tuck surgery, it is important to set aside enough time afterward to fully recover. When you try to return to work too early or push yourself before you are ready, it can prolong your recovery and increase your risk of complications. By understanding the expected recovery timeline, you can better prepare for your tummy tuck and each stage of healing. Our double board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Matthew H. Steele, will answer your questions and help you develop a plan for each step of your treatment so you know exactly what to expect.

What Happens on the Day of Your Surgery?

Your recovery schedule after an abdominoplasty begins on the day of your surgery. You will need to arrange transportation because you will not be able to drive home after general anesthesia. You will also want to arrange a comfortable space at home with everything you need nearby, such as fluids, snacks, medications, and entertainment. Ask for help from family, friends, or neighbors when you need it, and understand that you will feel swollen and sore immediately after surgery, but this will subside in the days that follow.

The Following Weeks After a Tummy Tuck

After the first day, your tummy tuck recovery will follow a predictable week-by-week timeline.

First Week

During your first week of recovery, avoid strenuous activity and excessive movement to avoid stress on your incision. Our team will meet with you for a follow-up during this week to monitor your healing and ensure your incisions are healing appropriately.

Second Week

Depending on your job, you may be able to return to work by week 2 of your recovery. While you may feel tender and need to limit your activity more than usual, you can still participate in many of your regular activities. Avoid increasing your activity too quickly as you return to your regular routine.

Third Week

By week 3 and 4, you can return to many of your regular activities. If you experience mild discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain medication as needed. You will continue to wear your compression garments 24 hours a day until your second month when you will transition to half the time.
