The active injectable ingredient in Kybella® is called deoxycholic acid and is similar to natural acids produced in the digestive system. In most cases, patients will need to have two to six treatments (spaced out at least one month apart) to achieve desired results.

Before the treatment, you will be asked to wash your face and neck to reduce the risk of infection. Your chin will then be sanitized with a surgical scrub, and Dr. Steele will mark the areas to be injected. He will then administer a local anesthetic and/or ice under your chin to help manage any pain.
Once the area is anesthetized, Dr. Steele or Jennifer will inject the various sites with a tiny needle. Patients typically receive 20 to 30 injections per session, and the process is quick and relatively painless.
After the procedure, you can go home and apply ice to your neck on and off for the next couple of days to help reduce the anticipated swelling. Also avoid vigorous exercise in the days following a Kybella® injection at our Fort Worth practice. We typically recommend rest after your treatment, so you are encouraged to take a few hours off of work or have Kybella® administered before a weekend off. Most patients see a gradual reduction of fat beneath the chin within four to six weeks after a Kybella® treatment.
Kybella® is FDA approved for specific areas of excess fat such as a double chin but is not intended to treat large areas of fat deposits on the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks. Some patients experience side effects such as pain, swelling, bruising, numbness, and reddish skin, but these typically subside within a few days. Recovery time is minimal in most cases, and although downtime varies from patient to patient, side effects typically subside within one to two weeks.
