Movement and Sleeping Restrictions After a Breast Augmentation

Breast enhancement is a significant plastic surgery procedure, and your recovery restrictions will directly impact how well your body heals. Prospective patients often wonder about their movement and sleeping restrictions after a breast augmentation. We can explain what you should expect after surgery, help you prepare for the aftermath, and avoid complications.

Activity Restrictions After Breast Augmentation

In the days and weeks after surgery, your body is working to heal around the silicone implants and adjust to your new anatomy. Overexertion or aggressive movement during this period can increase swelling, raise the risk of complications, and disrupt the position of the implants as they settle.

Double-board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Matthew H. Steele will provide specific post-operative instructions tailored to your breast enhancement surgery. In general, patients should avoid lifting anything heavier than 10-20 pounds for 6 weeks following surgery. Reaching overhead or doing any activity that engages the chest or pectoral muscles can place strain on the incisions and the surrounding tissue. Patients should typically avoid strenuous exercise, including cardio and upper-body workouts, at least 3  weeks.

In the days immediately after surgery, short, gentle walks are an ideal way to stay mobile. Movement helps your circulation and can reduce the risk of blood clots, but it should remain gentle and controlled until Dr. Steele clears you for more activity.

What Is the Best Sleeping Position After Breast Augmentation?

During the early weeks of healing from a breast enhancement, Dr. Steele recommends sleeping on your back with your upper body propped at a slight incline. This position reduces pressure on the chest, helps resolve swelling, and keeps the implants in place as healing progresses.

Conversely, sleeping on your side or stomach places direct pressure on the breast tissue and the implants, which can be both uncomfortable and counterproductive to your recovery. Most patients need to maintain back sleeping for six weeks. Dr. Steele will advise you on the appropriate time to transition to other positions depending on how your healing progresses.

What To Expect Over Time After a Breast Augmentation

Swelling and tightness are normal in the early weeks and will gradually resolve. Scars from the incisions will fade over time, and microneedling can help address scar healing once you are cleared for those treatments. You should closely follow Dr. Steele’s enhanced recovery protocol to position you for a smooth recovery from your breast implant surgery and help you achieve the results for which you have worked.
