There are a variety of factors that cause breasts to sag (known as ptosis), including pregnancy, weight loss, and loss of elasticity due to age. If you want your breasts to have a perkier appearance, you may benefit from a breast lift. This procedure involves removing excess skin, reshaping the breast tissue to create a youthful contour, and moving the nipple to a higher position on the breast. If you are also interested in increased breast size, our double Board-certified plastic surgeon can combine a lift with a breast implant.
There are typically three different types of breast incisions that can be used during a breast lift, depending on your needs. Dr. Matthew Steele, M.D., will work with you to determine which incision will work best for your anatomy.
Concentric/”Doughnut” Mastopexy
This technique involves excising a circular section of skin from around the areola, and is beneficial when only a small amount (1-2 cm) of lift is necessary. The scar resulting from this type of incision stays within the perimeter of the breast’s areola. However, if performed too aggressively with the nipple moved too high, this technique can lead to a flat breast with a wide areola and thick scars. Because of this, it is suitable only for mild ptosis.
Vertical/”Lollipop” Mastopexy
This technique involves an incision around the areola and a vertical incision extending from the areola to the breast fold. It is often beneficial for alleviating mild to moderate sagging. If your areolae fall below your breast folds, this particular incision may be a good fit for you.
Inverted T/”Anchor” Mastopexy
This technique uses the incision type found in a lollipop mastopexy, with the addition of a horizontal incision along the underside of the breast in the crease. This option creates the largest incision and is beneficial for alleviating moderate to severe breast sagging. During the procedure, the surgeon repositions the nipple and removes excess skin and tissue to create a more youthful, structured appearance.
