Eyelid Surgery in Parker County

When you are unhappy with excess skin and fat on your upper or lower eyelids, eyelid surgery in Parker County can help remove the skin, reduce the fat, reshape your eye area, and even improve your visual fields. Overall, this facial surgery procedure helps refresh your appearance, making you look more awake, youthful, and alert.

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty or an eye lift, is a short, simple procedure with impressive cosmetic results.

Why You Might Consider Eyelid Surgery

As you age, skin loses elastin and collagen, which are the proteins that provide structure and elasticity. Loss of these proteins causes the skin to sag and droop, causing bags under your eyes or sagging skin in your upper eyelid.

The added skin can make you look older and tired, and reduce your peripheral vision, which is the area you see on both sides without moving your eyes or head. In addition to removing excess skin, blepharoplasty can also remove fat around your eyes and tighten muscles.

Depending on your cosmetic concerns and goals, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Matthew Steele can perform eyelid surgery on either the upper or lower eyelids, or do them simultaneously. The surgery improves the elasticity of the skin and reveals a brighter, more radiant appearance.

Note that while your eyes will appear rejuvenated, the surgery does not remove dark circles under the eyes or fine lines and wrinkles around the eye, commonly called “crow’s feet.” Other procedures can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles or add volume, such as a brow or forehead lift or injectable fillers and neurotoxins like BOTOX®. During your initial consultation, you and Dr. Steele can discuss which procedures will give you the look you want.

Am I a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

The best candidates for eyelid surgery are people in good health who have excess skin on their upper or lower eyelids. The ideal candidate will also have a realistic expectation of what cosmetic surgery can accomplish.

Most patients are at least 35 years old, but if droopy eyelids run in your family, surgery at an earlier age can help slow the process and build your confidence. Blepharoplasty does not alter your facial structure, so it should not significantly impact the way you look.

Eyelid surgery can help improve symmetry when your eyelids are uneven. Dr. Steele will request you stop smoking at least 4 weeks before and after the surgery, because this helps reduce the risk of side effects and improves healing.

Drooping eyelids can give you a tired and older appearance. Eyelid surgery in Parker County can make you look refreshed and awake, and often improves visual fields and vision-related health conditions, such as headaches.

What to Expect During Recovery

Lower eyelid surgery is performed at our accredited outpatient surgery center and usually takes a few hours.  Upper eyelid procedures can be done in the office, awake, under local anesthesia.  The incisions are made in the natural eyelid crease, so they are difficult to see once they have faded.

Dr. Steele will talk with you about stopping any medications or supplements that can increase the risk of bleeding before surgery. A trusted family member or friend must drive you home and, ideally, should stay with you on the first night.

For the first day, your eyes may feel dry or watery. Ice packs and sleeping with your head raised for the first few nights can help reduce swelling and discomfort. There is some risk of complications, but these are rare with blepharoplasty.

The stitches will remain in place for up a week, and while it is common to have some bruising or swelling, your eyelids should return to normal within one or two weeks. Most people are comfortable in public after roughly two weeks.

Before you leave, Dr. Steele will give you customized post-operative instructions on how to care for your eyes, any medications, and specific concerns to look for at the surgical site. In the months after eyelid surgery in Parker County, you will have follow-up visits to check on your progress. In most cases, you will be able to resume exercise and most activities within several weeks.
